The Fundamentals of Digital Art

I'm often asked, in particular by students, if I can recommend a book about digital art for new practitioners - and Richard Colson's new book fits perfectly. Breaking down both the technological and historical aspects, it neatly weaves together cutting edge and old school pioneer's work.

September brings us the Deptford Design Challenge at the Royal Festival Hall, The Guardian's 50 top UK designers... and... while I was googling for that I also found a nice review of one of my pieces from 2003. Which I'm well chuffed about as its one of my favourites...

Information Aesthetics.

Those who have not followed my work for long may be surprised to know that information visualisation and navigation is a passion of mine. Sadly in the last few years its been a little on the backburner for me personally, but its great to see others showcasing their thinking. Check out these links.

Not put anything new up on the site recently, but I'm busy working on a few things - installations for Design4science / Wellcome Foundation, a sports centre in the north of England, and busy in discussions with the V&A Museum.

Flickr.

I'm slowly setting up a Flickr site with various hi-res photographs. Speaking of which, I've just designed a pop-up card for the Victoria & Albert Museum's 150th Anniversary, and you'll find a picture of it there.

While most people look forward to a reunion to boast about their post-school sucesses, or more modern jot down a f*ck you note on friendsreunited, I feel exhonerated enough that someone's put me down as a 'notable alumni' on my schools wiki-page. Just as well they didn't expell me back in 93 for something I didn't even do then, as they had tried ... Still I can't be too bitter, there's plenty of things I did do ...

Me and Nick (Knight) have been doing a lot with 3D scanning of late for SHOWstudio. I'm working on a 3D engine allowing dynamic application of designs to models, and check out this (ethereal) 3D print Nick produced. Possibly one of the most elegant things I've ever seen produced by a computer.

Wish you were here!

I bought this postcard on the last day of my holiday in 2003 as it shows the block I was staying in. Little did I know that a few hours later I would break my neck in shot too, and that I would (luckily) do it right outside a hospital!

I'm tweaking my site, and adding dates to the entries, so you'll see old articles simply have arbitrary dates added. More soon.
